Coleman is a Lancashire native. Coleman graduated from Arnold School Blackpool, where she was able to get straight As in the A-levels she took. When discussing her Emmerdale appearance Coleman confessed that she regretted that she did not go to University. Coleman was a part of a theatre company, In Yer Space while during her time at university. The company performed at the Edinburgh Festival for the play Crystal Clear. Apart from being awarded a prize for acting, the play she performed was well received. Coleman is auditioning to join drama colleges in 2005, got Jasmine Thomas' role in Emmerdale. Coleman received two nominations for Awards in the year 2007. She was named The Best Newcomer in the British Soap Awards and Most Popular Newcomer at the National Television Awards. For the British Soap Awards of 2009 she was awarded in the categories Best Actress and Sexiest female, as well as the category for Best Dramatic Acting. Coleman got a nomination in the category of Best Actress from the TV Choice Awards. Steven Moffat revealed at a Doctor Who Press Conference on March 21, 2012 that Coleman was set to portray Matt Smith as the Doctor's Companion after Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill and other actors left the series. Moffat claimed that he selected Coleman to play the role of companion because she would work best with Smith. Also, Moffat noted that she talked faster than Smith.
